Where to Stay in Mykonos Without a Car
You can absolutely enjoy Mykonos without renting a car.
You can absolutely enjoy Mykonos without renting a car — but where you stay matters. The right base can mean walking to dinner, hopping on a bus to the beach and avoiding unnecessary transfers altogether.
Mykonos is small, but it is not always easy to move around spontaneously. Public buses cover many of the island’s main areas, while seasonal sea taxis connect several south-coast beaches. The easiest car-free stays are therefore the places where walking, buses and boats work together.
For most travellers, the strongest options are Mykonos Town, Ornos and Platis Gialos. Each gives you a different kind of trip — from nightlife and restaurants on foot to a beach-first stay with easy transport back to Chora.
Mykonos Town: Best for Walking Everywhere
If your priority is convenience, Mykonos Town is the easiest place to stay without a car.
Restaurants, bars, shops, Little Venice, the windmills and the old harbour are all walkable, which means your evenings do not depend on finding transport home.
It is also the island’s main transport hub. Buses leave from Fabrika for several southern beaches, while the Old Port area serves routes towards other parts of the island.
The trade-off is atmosphere.
Staying directly in the busiest parts of Chora can mean more noise, especially in high season, so travellers who want walkability without being in the middle of the nightlife may prefer accommodation slightly above or on the edges of town.
BEST FOR
First-time visitors · Nightlife · Restaurants · Short stays
Ornos: Best for Beach + Easy Access to Town
Ornos is one of the most practical beach bases on the island if you do not want to drive.
It combines a sheltered, organised beach with regular bus links to Mykonos Town, plus restaurants and hotels around the bay. Seasonal water-taxi connections also make it easier to reach other south-coast beaches without returning to town first.
Compared with Chora, Ornos feels more resort-like and relaxed.
It is especially convenient for couples, families and travellers who want the beach close by but still plan to spend evenings in town.
BEST FOR
Families · Couples · Beach-first stays · Easy logistics

Platis Gialos: Best for Beach Hopping
If you want to wake up near the water and explore several beaches without a car, Platis Gialos is one of the strongest choices.
It has direct bus connections to Chora and is also an important point on the south-coast water-taxi network, making beaches such as Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia easier to reach by boat during the season.
The beach itself is organised and lively, with hotels, restaurants and beach services within walking distance.
That combination makes Platis Gialos especially useful when your group wants flexibility: you can stay there all day or change beaches without turning transport into a project.
BEST FOR
Beach lovers · Families · First-timers · Beach hopping
Paradise & Paraga: Best if the Party Is the Plan
If your trip revolves around beach clubs and nightlife, staying around Paradise or Paraga can make sense.
Both areas are connected by bus from Mykonos Town, and Paradise is one of the easier party-beach destinations to reach without a car.
The important question is whether you actually want to spend most of your time there.
If you plan to be in Chora every evening, staying in town is usually easier. But if the beach-club scene is your main reason for travelling, staying close to it reduces the need for late-night transfers.
BEST FOR
Friends · Party trips · Beach clubs · Younger groups
What About Psarou?
Psarou works well if you want an upscale beach setting and are comfortable relying on buses, transfers or short trips to nearby Platis Gialos.
It is not as effortlessly car-free as Chora, Ornos or Platis Gialos, but it can still work if your trip is centred around the beach, dining and a more polished resort atmosphere.
For pure convenience, however, I would still rank Platis Gialos above Psarou for a no-car stay.
Areas I Would Avoid Without a Car
This is where choosing the right base becomes important.
Quieter parts of the north and east coast, along with more remote beaches, are harder to manage without private transport. Places such as Fokos, Mersini and Merchia have limited or no regular bus access, so taxis, transfers or a rental vehicle become much more useful.
Likewise, areas such as Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis and Ano Mera can work if you are happy organising your movements carefully, but they are not my first recommendation for travellers who want a completely effortless car-free holiday.

How to Get Around Without a Car
Mykonos’ public bus network operates from two main hubs in town: Fabrika and the Old Port. Routes and frequency change seasonally, so it is important to check the current timetable during your stay.
During the season, sea taxis can also be a useful way to move between several southern beaches, particularly from hubs such as Ornos and Platis Gialos.
For airport or port arrivals, late-night returns or places outside the bus network, a pre-arranged transfer is often the easiest backup.

The Advanza Tip
If you do not plan to rent a car, choose your accommodation based on your evenings first, not your mornings.
Beaches are relatively easy to reach during the day.
Getting back after dinner or nightlife is when location matters most.
If you know you will spend most evenings in Chora, stay in or close to Mykonos Town.
If you prefer beach days and quieter evenings, Ornos or Platis Gialos are usually the smarter choice.
