My First Scuba Diving Experience in Mykonos — Why Everyone Should Try It
Some experiences stay with you forever.
Breathing underwater for the first time feels strange, surreal and completely unforgettable. My Discover Scuba Diving experience with Mykonos Diving Center was all three.
I had always wanted to see what existed beneath the surface of the Aegean.
But when the moment finally came, I was nervous.
Standing on the beach with the equipment on, one thought kept repeating itself:
Can I really breathe underwater?
A few minutes later, I had my answer.
Yes — and once you stop overthinking it, the experience changes completely.

Before We Entered the Water
The experience began slowly.
Before getting anywhere near the sea, the team explained the equipment, the basic safety rules and what to expect once we entered the water.
There was a short briefing, time to ask questions and enough guidance to make everything feel manageable.
What made the biggest difference was the instructor.
Calm, clear and completely unhurried, he explained each step in a way that replaced nerves with curiosity.
You immediately felt that you were in experienced hands.
The First Breath Underwater
Then came the moment I had been waiting for.
We entered the sea slowly and began to descend.
At first, everything felt unfamiliar.
Your instinct is to think about every breath, every movement, every piece of equipment.
And then the instructor reminded me of the simplest rule:
Just breathe slowly and naturally.
That was the turning point.
The moment I stopped trying to control everything, I started to enjoy it.
A Whole New World
As we descended, equalising became part of the rhythm.
A small action, but an important one.
And then suddenly, everything became quiet.
Not completely silent — you can still hear your own breathing — but quiet enough to feel as though the rest of the world has disappeared.
Blue water.
Fish moving around us.
Light shifting through the sea.
It is difficult to describe how peaceful it feels until you experience it yourself.
For a few minutes, Mykonos no longer felt like beaches, restaurants or nightlife.
It felt like another world entirely.
Respecting What’s Below
One of the moments I remember most was spotting a shell on the seabed.
I asked whether I could take it with me.
The answer was simple:
No. We leave everything exactly as we found it.
That stayed with me.
The same principle applied to the marine life around us: observe, but do not touch.
The experience was not only about seeing the underwater world.
It was also about understanding that we are visitors in it.
From Fear to Wonder
At the beginning, part of me wanted to surface.
Everything felt unfamiliar.
Then, little by little, the fear disappeared.
I trusted the instructor.
I trusted the equipment.
And eventually, I trusted myself.
At some point I realised I was smiling underwater.
By the end, I did not want the dive to finish.
That is probably what surprised me most.
The experience began with uncertainty and ended with the feeling that I had discovered something I wanted more of.

The Advanza Tip
If it is your first dive, do not rush the first few minutes.
That is usually when your brain is adjusting to the feeling of breathing underwater.
Focus on slow breaths, listen to your instructor and give yourself time.
Once you relax, the entire experience changes.
